New Release
The City of Hip-Hop
By Rob Swift & Rasul A. Mowatt · Routledge (1st Edition)
A unique conceptualization of the history of hip-hop — arguing that political, economic, and social forces of the 1970s produced the environment for hip-hop to grow in the geographies of New York City and the "Boogie Down" Bronx. A cultural reaction, a geographic specificity, and a story that deserves to be retold.

What the Students Say

“Rob is an astonishing teacher, and DJ all in one. Rob is on a different level of DJing and that said, teaching his students in the Brolic Army this art form. After learning through Rob I am able to experiment and achieve so much more in the DJ world than I ever imagined.”

“No matter what level you are at, or think you are at, Rob will make you a better DJ. He has a rare blend of the ability to perform and teach. It’s like learning the blues from Muddy Waters, he is a true pioneer and who better to learn from than a pioneer of the craft. He will have you step your game up.”

“I randomly booked a one to one lesson with Rob Swift in hopes to obtain an additional perspective & approach for my beat juggling.
He asked me to freestyle juggle in order to evaluate what I can do, then immediately broke down some of my main strengths, weaknesses and showed me a juggle that I had never purposely done or tried to learn before. This one juggle instantly opened up a whole new vocabulary of beatjuggle technics, along with the fresh new approach I was looking for.
Being great at communicating, humble & most definitely knowing what he’s talking about, I would highly recommend Rob Swift as a teacher for turntable arts!”

“When I first started studying turntablism, I found the initial steps of juggling quite tricky on my own. I stumbled across a video of Rob Swift teaching students online and sent him a message to see if I could “enroll”. We would have live sessions via skype once a month as well as videos to follow up on what we went through and the rest is history.
What Rob taught me in those 2 years has led me to become Brolic Army Civil War Champ, Kame House Australian Champ and most recently, 2 x Australian DMC Champ.”
Where It All Began
A Life Behind the Wheels of Steel
After years of honing his skills under the tutelage of his older brother, father, and mentor, Rob Swift was tapped in 1991 by a Harlem-based DJ crew called the X-Men. Within a year, he won the coveted DMC East Coast title — the beginning of his global recognition as a masterful DJ.
The X-Ecutioners' major-label debut, Built From Scratch, generated the colossal hit "It's Goin' Down" featuring Linkin Park. As a solo artist, Rob has pushed the boundaries with genre-busting albums, collaborating with everyone from Herbie Hancock to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Today, Rob teaches DJ art worldwide — from MIT and The New School to workshops across Colombia, Tajikistan and the UAE — and passes down the culture through the Brolic Army DJ School.
